The Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership (GICL) takes a research-based approach to executive education for agricultural cooperative stakeholders, equipping managers and directors with practical tools and strategic insight to strengthen their organizations.
Founded in 1971, GICL began as the vision of Howard Cowden, former MFA Incorporated employee and founder of Farmland Industries, who recognized the need for advanced training in cooperative governance and management. Working with Elmer Kiehl, Dean of the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, and university faculty, Cowden helped establish GICL as a forum for learning, research, and collaboration among cooperative leaders.
GICL’s programming includes the Summer Institute, the Board Chair and CEO Conference, the Bob and Lynda Engel Workshop Series, and the Cooperative Advantage Series.
Today, GICL continues its 50-year legacy of advancing the cooperative business model and developing leaders who shape the future of producer-owned and -controlled enterprises.
